Redact PDF

True redaction is not the same as drawing a black rectangle over text in a PDF editor. If the underlying text layer is still present beneath a drawn box, the original content can be recovered by selecting and copying the text or by removing the covering element. The Redact PDF tool performs permanent redaction — the selected content is irreversibly removed from the PDF data, replaced by solid black marks that contain no recoverable information.

This distinction is critical in legal, medical, financial, and government contexts. Courts have rejected documents where "redaction" was accomplished with opaque shapes that could be removed digitally. Our tool eliminates the underlying data so the redacted information is truly gone from the file.

When proper redaction is essential:

• Removing personally identifiable information (PII) such as names, addresses, and ID numbers before publishing public records
• Blacking out confidential pricing, proprietary terms, or trade secrets before sharing a contract with a third party
• Removing social security numbers, patient IDs, or financial account numbers from documents before submission
• Complying with GDPR, HIPAA, CCPA, or similar data protection regulations when sharing documents externally

After redaction, the tool also flattens the document to prevent form fields from being used to access concealed content.
