About Watermark PDF

Watermarks serve as visual indicators of a document's status, ownership, or distribution restrictions. The Add Watermark tool stamps your chosen text onto every page of your PDF at a specified opacity and position — making it immediately clear whether a document is a draft, confidential, for review only, or proprietary to your organisation.

The watermark text is rendered as a semi-transparent overlay directly in the PDF content layer. This means it appears in all viewers, renders when printed, and cannot be removed simply by taking a screenshot (unlike watermarks applied only as a visual layer in some tools). You control opacity from 10% (barely visible) to 80% (prominent).

Position options:

  • Center (diagonal): The classic diagonal watermark style, covering the full page. Most recognisable and hardest to ignore.
  • Top: Placed at the top of each page, less obstructive to body content.
  • Bottom: Footer-style watermark for subtle branding or status marking.

Typical watermark uses:

  • "DRAFT" to indicate a document is not yet final
  • "CONFIDENTIAL" to restrict distribution of sensitive reports
  • "FOR REVIEW ONLY" on external reviewer copies
  • Company name for branded document distribution
  • "SAMPLE" on preview versions of paid content

Watermarks added by this tool are embedded in the PDF and appear in all PDF viewers and when printed. They are not encrypted — determined users with PDF editing software could potentially remove them. For document security beyond watermarking, combine with password protection. To add sequential page numbers alongside the watermark, use Add Page Numbers as a separate step.

Privacy: Files are uploaded over HTTPS and deleted within one hour. The tool is free with no account required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the watermark be removed by recipients?
The watermark is embedded in the PDF content layer, not just a visual overlay. It cannot be removed by simply viewing the file, but someone with PDF editing software could attempt to remove it. For maximum security, combine watermarking with password protection.
What opacity should I use?
30% opacity (default) is recommended — clearly visible but not so heavy that it obscures the underlying content. Choose 10% for subtle branding and 50%–80% for prominent warnings.
Can I add an image watermark?
Currently the tool supports text watermarks only. Image watermarks (e.g. company logos) are not yet supported.
Is the tool free?
Yes. Free with no account or daily limits.
What is the file size limit?
Up to 50 MB per PDF file.
Are my files secure?
Files are transmitted over HTTPS and deleted within one hour.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Works in mobile browsers without any app.
What browsers are supported?
Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop and mobile.
How long does it take?
Usually 5–15 seconds.
Will the watermark appear when I print the PDF?
Yes. The watermark is embedded in the page content and appears in all viewers and when printed.
