Flatten PDF

A PDF with interactive form fields or annotations can be problematic in certain situations: form values may not print correctly in all viewers, annotations may be hidden when the document is converted or archived, and editable fields can be changed by recipients after submission. Flatten PDF resolves all of these issues by merging every interactive element into the static page content.

Flattening works by iterating over each annotation, form field, and interactive element in the PDF and rendering its current value or appearance directly into the page content stream. After flattening, the form field widget no longer exists as a separate, interactive element — its value becomes part of the visible page, just like any other text or image.

Situations requiring PDF flattening:

• Preventing recipients from altering completed form values after submission
• Ensuring annotations and sticky notes are visible in all PDF viewers
• Preparing a PDF for archiving in PDF/A format (which requires no interactive elements)
• Fixing printing issues where form fields appear blank or misaligned
• Creating a final, non-editable version of a signed agreement

Flattening is a one-way operation — you cannot convert a flattened PDF back into an editable form. Always keep a backup of the original form PDF before flattening.
