About Repair PDF

PDF files can become corrupted in many ways: a failed download, a storage device error, an abrupt power cut during saving, email attachment truncation, or file system damage. A corrupted PDF may refuse to open, show garbled content, or cause your viewer to crash. The Repair PDF tool attempts to reconstruct the file structure and recover as much readable content as possible.

PDF files have a specific internal structure including a header, object streams, cross-reference tables, and a trailer. When any of these structural components are damaged, PDF readers fail to parse the file correctly. Our repair engine:

  • Rebuilds missing or damaged cross-reference tables from available object data
  • Recovers page objects even when the main page tree is broken
  • Reconstructs the document catalog and metadata where possible
  • Strips malformed objects that prevent rendering

Types of damage the tool can address:

  • Truncated files (download cut off before completion)
  • Damaged cross-reference tables caused by storage errors
  • Header corruption from partial file overwrites
  • Object stream errors from failed incremental saves

Limitations: If the actual page content data (image streams, font data) is physically overwritten or encrypted with unknown keys, that content cannot be recovered. The tool can only recover what structurally exists in the damaged file.

After repair, it is a good practice to immediately create a backup copy of the recovered file. You may also want to convert it to PDF/A format for more robust long-term storage going forward.

Privacy: Uploaded files are processed on isolated servers over HTTPS and deleted within one hour. No account is required.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes PDF corruption?
Common causes include interrupted downloads, storage device failures, power cuts during saving, email attachment truncation, and file system errors.
Can all corrupted PDFs be repaired?
Not always. If the actual content data is physically destroyed rather than just the file structure, full recovery may not be possible. The tool recovers what is structurally accessible.
Will all my original pages be recovered?
Recovery depends on the extent of damage. Structural corruption often allows full page recovery. Physical data loss recovers only the intact portions.
Is the tool free?
Yes. Free with no account or usage limits.
What is the file size limit?
Up to 50 MB per file.
Are my files secure?
Files are transmitted over HTTPS and deleted within one hour of processing.
Can I use this on mobile?
Yes. Works in mobile browsers on iOS and Android.
What browsers are supported?
Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge on desktop and mobile.
How long does repair take?
Usually 10–30 seconds. Severely corrupted files may take slightly longer.
What should I do if repair does not work?
Check if you have a backup copy. Try opening the file in a different PDF reader. Some files with physical sector damage may be unrecoverable.
