Why Count Words?

Word counts matter everywhere: essays have minimum requirements, tweets have character limits, blog posts need optimal length for SEO, and contracts need precise length for legal clarity. Having an accurate, instant word counter saves time and prevents surprises at submission.

Character Limits for Common Platforms

| Platform | Limit | |---|---| | Twitter/X post | 280 characters | | Instagram caption | 2,200 characters | | LinkedIn post | 3,000 characters | | Facebook post | 63,206 characters | | YouTube description | 5,000 characters | | Meta description (SEO) | 155–160 characters | | Google Ads headline | 30 characters |

What Is a Good Blog Post Length for SEO?

Research consistently shows that long-form content ranks better. Here's a practical breakdown:

  • 1,500–2,500 words — Sweet spot for most blog posts. Thorough enough to rank, readable enough to finish.
  • 2,500–4,000 words — In-depth guides and pillar content. Best for competitive keywords.
  • 700–1,500 words — News, updates, product pages. Fine for low-competition topics.

How Reading Time Is Calculated

The average adult reads approximately 200–250 words per minute (wpm) for online text. Our word counter uses 200 wpm as the baseline. A 1,000-word article takes about 5 minutes to read.

Speaking time is slower — approximately 130 wpm. This is useful for speeches, podcasts, and video scripts. A 5-minute speech needs roughly 650–700 words.

Counting Words vs. Counting Characters

Word count counts space-separated tokens. "Hello world" = 2 words. Character count includes every character including spaces. "Hello world" = 11 characters with space, 10 without. Most academic requirements use words; social media limits use characters.
