To add days to a date, count forward from the start date. "What date is 30 days from June 14, 2026?" Count 16 remaining days in June + 14 in July = July 14, 2026. For months: June 14 + 3 months = September 14, 2026. For end-of-month edge cases (January 31 + 1 month = February 28/29), different systems apply different rules.

What Is a Date Calculator?

A date calculator is a tool that adds or subtracts a specified number of days, weeks, months, or years from a given date and returns the resulting date. It handles the complexity of calendar arithmetic for you — including varying month lengths (28, 29, 30, or 31 days), leap years, and end-of-month edge cases that make manual date math error-prone.

Date arithmetic comes up constantly in everyday and professional life: calculating when a 30-day or 90-day deadline falls, finding a contract's end date from its start date, determining when a net-30 invoice is due, setting subscription renewal reminders, planning project timelines, and figuring out how many days until an upcoming event.

The challenge with manual date calculation is that months have different lengths, February changes with leap years, and adding "one month" to January 31 has no clean answer (February 31 does not exist). A date calculator resolves these edge cases consistently — most use the convention of snapping to the last day of the resulting month when the calculated date would be invalid.

Date calculators also support subtraction: given two dates, subtract one from the other to find the number of days between them. This is useful for calculating age, measuring elapsed time in a project, or verifying how much time remains before a deadline.

Date Addition Formulas

Add days: Count forward from start date, handling month boundaries.

Add months: Add the month number; if the result exceeds 12, roll to next year. For month-end dates, use the last day of the resulting month (January 31 + 1 month = February 28 or 29 in leap year, because February 31 doesn't exist).

Add years: Add to the year field. Special case: February 29 exists only in leap years — February 29 + 1 year = February 28 in non-leap years.

Mixed addition: Add years first, then months, then days. Start: March 15, 2026. Add 1 year 3 months 10 days: → March 15, 2027 (add 1 yr) → June 15, 2027 (add 3 mo) → June 25, 2027 (add 10 days) = June 25, 2027.

Common Date Calculations

| Start Date | Operation | Result | |-----------|-----------|--------| | Today (Jun 14, 2026) | + 30 days | July 14, 2026 | | Today (Jun 14, 2026) | + 90 days | September 12, 2026 | | Jan 31, 2026 | + 1 month | February 28, 2026 | | March 1, 2026 | − 1 day | February 28, 2026 | | Dec 15, 2025 | + 6 weeks | January 26, 2026 | | Jun 1, 2026 | + 12 months | June 1, 2027 | | Apr 1, 2026 | + 1 year | April 1, 2027 |

Practical Use Cases

Legal deadlines: "Plaintiff must respond within 30 days of service." Service on September 5: response due October 5. If October 5 is a Saturday, due date shifts to the next business day: October 7 (most legal jurisdictions follow this rule, but verify with your jurisdiction).

Net 30 payment terms: Invoice dated August 15: payment due September 14 (30 calendar days). Invoice dated October 31: payment due November 30 (not October 31 + 30 = November 30; but check whether your agreement counts from invoice date or receipt date).

Subscription and contract terms: 1-year subscription starting June 14, 2026: renewal/expiration = June 14, 2027. Monthly subscription starting March 31: next billing = April 30 (not April 31, which doesn't exist). Platforms handle this differently — some bill on the 28th to avoid month-end issues.

Construction and project management: Project start: July 1. Duration: 18 weeks = 126 days. End date: July 1 + 126 days = November 4. Excluding weekends from 18 work weeks: 18 weeks × 5 business days = 90 business days. End date with business days only: significantly later.

Leap Year Rules

A year is a leap year if:

  1. Divisible by 4 (e.g., 2024, 2028)
  2. EXCEPT if divisible by 100 (1900, 2100 are NOT leap years)
  3. EXCEPT again if divisible by 400 (2000, 2400 ARE leap years)

Recent leap years: 2020, 2024, 2028. Non-leap years divisible by 4: 2100, 2200, 2300 (but 2400 is a leap year).

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the last day to respond if I have 30 days from today? Add exactly 30 days to today's date. June 14 + 30 days = July 14. "30 days from today" means the response is due on day 30, counting today as day 0 or day 1 depending on the convention. Legal deadlines often specify whether to "count the trigger day" — if the clock starts on the day of service (day 0), day 30 is 30 days later. If it starts the day after service (day 1), day 30 is one day shorter. Check your specific legal context.

How do I calculate when a 90-day warranty expires? From the purchase date, add 90 calendar days. If purchased on January 10, 2026: warranty expires April 10, 2026. Manufacturers may specify business days instead of calendar days for repair timelines, but warranty periods are almost always calendar days. Keep receipts showing the purchase date — warranty start date is usually purchase date, not shipping date.

What date is 6 months from today? Add 6 months to today's date. From June 14, 2026: June + 6 = December. Result: December 14, 2026. For end-of-month dates: August 31 + 6 months = February 28, 2027 (February doesn't have 31 days). The date calculator handles all these edge cases automatically.

How do I calculate the number of months between two dates? Complete months: compare months, adjusting for year difference. From March 10, 2025 to October 10, 2026: (2026 − 2025) × 12 + (10 − 3) = 12 + 7 = 19 complete months. If the end date's day is less than the start date's day: subtract 1 month. From March 10 to October 5: the October 5 hasn't passed the 10th mark, so 18 complete months.

Do courts count legal days differently from calendar days? Yes. Many court rules specify "court days" or "business days" and exclude weekends, federal holidays, and sometimes state holidays. Some rules exclude the triggering event day but include the last day. If the last day falls on a non-court day, the deadline shifts to the next court day. Always check the specific rule's definition section and your local court rules. For legal deadlines, use a legal calendaring tool or confirm with a legal professional rather than relying on a general date calculator.
